Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the industrialized world. ARMD is a progressive disease that attacks the central part of the retina, known as the “macula”, and thus primarily affects your “central vision”. This condition rarely causes complete blindness, but it can destroy almost all vision except peripheral vision. Therefore, it directly impacts your daily functioning of activities such as driving, reading, or watching TV. Many patients with “dry” age-related macular degeneration may benefit from special eye vitamins. Others with “wet” age-related macular degeneration may need treatment with medications to reduce abnormal blood vessel formation in the back of the eye. At Athens Eye Associates, our doctors perform thorough exams and use the latest digital retinal photography and retinal imaging to catch the early signs of age-related macular degeneration and suggest preventative care or treatment to maximize visual potential.
